2010 Washington State Republican Party Convention Candidate Speeches

Intro - Rob McKenna discussing the unconstitutionality of ObamaCare. Of the 46 mil, 9 mil are already covered, another 9 mil are illegal. 14 mil make below the minimum income so medicaid will cover them, so bill only covers 14 million of the 46 million uninsured.

"The Constitution has no shelf life, it is enduring". The idea that the government can order you to go into the market and purchase something, where will it stop? What else can the government force you to do?

Finally, it is about respect for the rule of law, starting with the Constitution. There is another lawsuit on Obama and the Department of Energy. Yucca Mountain. Gregior says they are doing it to benifit Reid (D- NV). This type of flagrant disreguard for the Constitution is what he calls the ACORN philosophy, only obey the laws that you like.

Sam Reed - Rob and I are lonely in Olympia, we need to elect more Republicans. There are some great candidates and they are working their "fanny's" off.

I stood before you a couple years ago and told you that we were challenged by the liberals because we didn't allow felons to vote here in Washington, we won in the State Court, won in Federal Court, and lost in the Circuit Court (9th Circuit -- San Fran), and we're taking it to the Supreme Court.

Scrubbing the list of voter registration, we have cleared over 750,000 _________ voters (moved out of the state or dead...). Have gotten 25 voter reforms pushed through. The one that hasn't gotten through is the one that makes it easier for the military to vote in elections (Cleared the House, but shot down in the Senate).

If you agree with someone 80% of the time, that's your ally. Unity wins elections.

Cathy McMorris-Rodgers -US Congress 5th CD (Spokane), Vice Chair of House Republican Conference. "today the Republicans are on the Offense, Democrats are running scared. 2 great partners in Congress, Doc Hastings and Dave Riechart. In 1994, Washington State had the largest shift of power out of all the states, we elected 6 Republicans. We need to harness the vision of 1994, courageous conservatism. We need a positive message if we are entrusted into power again.

Patriot Pledge:

1. BB
2. End Wasteful Washington Spending (Google YouCut). Americans vote on what to cut, Republicans take winner and take it to the floor of the House for an up or down vote.
3. Repeal Health Care Bill
4. Simplify the Tax Code
5. Reverse Wall St. Bailouts. The only thing too big to fail is America itself
6. Audit the Federal Reserve.
7. Bring Americas education system into the 20th century
8. Energy Independence.
9. End illegal immigration as we know it.
10. Protect our kids from internet predators.

Senate Candidates:

Rossi: "You ready to win? 2010 is goign to be a great year. I'm running for Senate because our country is in trouble. Our Bankers, the Chinese, are telling us we're spending too much money. I have never been more serious about anything in my life. that's why I'm running for the US Senate. I can't sit by as we pass on to our children a life worse off than what we inherited. Pelosi, Reid, Murry - Command and Control structure in D.C.

End Earmarks. We need a Balanced Budget Ammendment, lost by one vote - Patty Murry.

Why did it take so long to get in the race, with kids its not an easy choice. Wife said 'You're in a position do actually do something about this, if you're willing to do it, I will support you 100%. I really don't have confidence that if You win back the majority you would do the right thing with it. As a state Senator, we balanced the budget without raising taxes. EFF award for being the architect of the most financially conservative budget in Washington.

Establishment - I'm not the establishment, SEIU, ACORN, MoveOn.org is. I can go up against these guys. We got more fans on Facebook in 48 hours than Patty Murray (Behind Marco Rubio and Rand Paul).

Get America back to its limited government role, means pushing back on Reid/Pelosi, ability to say "no" and push back agaist special interests.

We all have a role to play to keep America free and prosperous, we can't leave it up to the elites, we all have to fight for it.

Akers:

in 1913 my grandparents risked everything to come from Greece to Ellis Island, legally. they didn't climb over any fences or break any laws. All 9 daughters learned English.

International product development company using Lean Manufacturing. We create J-O-B-S. In 2008 we had to make some very hard decisions
1. Survive
2. Don't lay anyone off and don't cut pay
3. Prosper in the downturn.

We hired more people and expanded our manufacturing base. 43 employees, 40 outside problem solvers.

10-3-Lean

Cut taxes by 10% for 3 consecutive years, 30% roll back, give the money back to the people

Use Lean systems in Government - Eliminate waste, add value. Empower people at the local level to solve problems.

America is begging for authentic leadership, but people are being elected who just talk the talk but have never done.

Paul, a businessman can't survie in D.C., I say, America can't survive another politician.

Didier:

We the people, we the people, the first 3 words of the most powerful document of this great land. Its time we the people had the fortitude to take our country back.

I have a game plan, government accountability to "we the people". Military, national security, Secure our borders. remove the shackles on businesses.

Yesterday I had my whole day planned out, and then Sarah called.

When I get to D.C., there's gonna be hell to pay, and I'm taking the heat to them. It was at home that I learned about hard work, persistence, determination... These are the qualities that made America great.

Some people may say, he's just a football jock, for 8 years our guys had the football and we have our backs agaist the wall. Its time to get offensive and start pushing back

America is in a world of hurt, how are we going to get our country back, the Constitution and the Lord God Almighty.

"The American dream isn't riches and success, it's freedom"

Braveheart - "You are free if your heart is free"

Matthew Burke:

With your help I will replace far left extreamist, Jay Inslee. I'm a CFP, I'd be in my 23rd year if I didn't throw my hat in. I'm not a politician, I'm not a beauricrat and I'm not a former governemnt employee. I'm a dad, I'm a bas

Less Government = More Freedom. That is the unbreakable equation that will guide everything I vote for and vote against in D.C.

Sometimes its not enough to the the party of "no", but to be the party of "hell no".

We are at war with people who want to regulate and tax every aspect of our lives. These people must be stopped. We cannot afford politics as ussuall. we need conservatives to be conservatives. No more Liberal Lights, no more RINOs. Our Country will never return to prosperity with an upsidown tax system that rewards the unproductive and _______ the successful

As a party we must unite with the people we agree with the overwhelming majority of the time.

James Watkins:

I'm James Watkins, I'm the guy thats going to beat Jay Inslee.

The country that we know and love, the very essence of America is starting to slip away. Because of failed government policies, we are starting to look like a Europian Nation

Working together we're going to restore the dream

Are you better off today than you were 4 trillion dollars ago?

in 2010, we the people are going to kick them out. We are going to kick them out of Oly, D.C. and take our country back

I'm the only candidate that has cut spending at the federal level and created private jobs. I'll do it again. I'll change the business climate where businesses can grow and flourish.

We've had Inslee for 12 years, this year we're going to kick him out and this time he'll move west to the Pacific.

Jay's polling at 37%, I'm everything he's not, I got an MBA, he's got a law degree, He grows government I'll reduce it.

Jay called us the forces of darkness, but I look around and see great Americans. I look around and all I can say is "May the force be with us".

John Koster:

I'm a 3rd gen dairy farmer, started on the farm in 1951 with nothing except values and hard work. Mom passed away at the age of 41. Repeal Estate Tax permanently. If someone were to ask me if I was going to run for office 2 years ago I would have said "no way" but we've seen government take overs of businesses, we've seen politicians walking all over and mocking the Constitution and the rule of law

Whats the difference between 10 years ago and now? 10 years ago we had a surplus, now we have massive debt. They believe in big government, they don't believe in big government, they don't belive in the people.

We're gonna look back on the elections of 2010, we're either gonna say "we made the decision to take our country back" or we're gonna say

1. Repeal
2. Eliminate unconstitutional departments
3. Eliminate cap and trade
4. Tax reform, Fair Tax, Flat Tax...anythings better that what we have now.

Government has the right to secure our rights and that's it. Freedom isn't free, we have an obligation to our military and vets to ensure freedom at home so they come home to a free country. This is America, this is the greatest country on God's green earth. Lets regain our sense of greatness, of can-do. Its gonna take some work, but we can take our country back.

Jamie Herrera:

Running against Brian Baird. Today people are hurting and the American dream is at stake. This is my home, I have been honored to represent this area as a State Rep.

D.C. pushes government policies that limit our freedoms, they think they know better how to live our lives, rais our kids and run our busineses. the American dream, passing on a better life to the next generation, is at risk.

Congress is talking about bailing out whole countries. It's like they look at Greece as a goal more than a threat.

They are contemplating Cap-and-Trade and a VAT. These people need to be stopped. When government takes money out of our pockets, it shackles dreams. How can you start a business, invest in your children education or buy a house when government keeps taxing you?

Now is the time for the next generation of leaders to take the reins to fight for limited government.

David Hedrick:

I'm from the tea party and proud to be a Republican. What is the job of a Congressman, "Bring Home the Pork"

A polician can bring home the Pork, but first he has to steal the pig.

The role of a congressman is to support and defend the Constitution and get out of the way.

Repeal ObamaCare. People say Obama will just Veto it, but let him.

Email from France, why are you turning away from freedom in America? America is on a bus, and we see all these warning signs and we keep on sending moderates to drive the bus, we need someone who wants to save the passengers and change the direction of the bus.

Whats the new face of the Republican party? In my hand I hold a Constitution, Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the new face of the Republican party.

"Freedom is not just our History, it is our Destiny"

David Castillo:

Its great to be amoung my fellow Republicans, but more importantly it's great to be amoung fellow conservatives. Our future is too important to sit and wait for the path of least resistance to present itself.

Ronald Reagan - The Speech

We need to stand up against big government progressives, big government spending that our children will inherit. "Taxation without Representation"

18 months ago, we elected an unqualified president, but now Conservatisim is on the accent.

No man grants us those rights, and no govnerment can take it away. Standing in line for foodstamps and free lunches are not inspiring, but seeing the free market work is inspiring. I learned that working hard and getting ahead in life is the foundation of the American dream.

Denn Heck will most likely be the Democrat nominee, he will tell people that he is a moderate blue dog democrat, but he's a big government progressive.

We can not have career politicians who are simply looking for the best jobs they've ever had.

God bless you and God Bless America.

Doc Hastings:

We know that elections have consequences. We are headed on a path that is unsustainable and the only way to change that is this years elections. I was elected in 94, I'm asked, are there any similarities? There are a lot of similarities and the differences are on the positive side.

In CA, there were 6 issues on the ballot, 1 was to limit pay increases, the other 5 were tax increases, all of them were defeted, even in SF (55-45). If SF gets it, we get it.

No budget on the Federal Level this year. There is a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit on the federal budget, Pelosi and Reid don't want to put their Democrats out there to have to vote for that kind of budget.

We need Republicans from around Washington State that can get us back on track

Credentials report: 1179 voting delegates

Rules Committee - Grant Peterson
Debate on Article 5 Section 3 - Motion to strike the wording requiring 20% (356 delegates )approval to set aside and reserve sections for debate on the platform. Limit debate v. Full Debate. Motion not passed

Lunch

Doug Cloud:

We live in historic times. Are you up for it? Every era demands a different type of leader. I stand for the principals of our United States Constitution. I stnad agaist C&T, bailouts, curruption.

Norm dicks has no idea what to do, we all know what to do, our forefathers knew what to do, they needed to fight for principals. In times of crisis, thats the only thing we have, standing with our principals.

From the bottom of your heart and the depth of your soul, are you up for it? I'm Doug Cloud, and I'm up for it.

Jesse Young:

Fore Score and a very long time ago, Norm Dicks was elected into office. How many of you are willing to roll over and give up just because Norm Dicks has won 70 - 30 constantly.

I grew up in Tacoma, gangs... Mom taught me personal Responsibility, mom working 2 jobs, asked mom, "Why can't we afford new shoes?" Mom taught him about personal responsibility and refused to take welfare. The American dream is still possible if we don't give up.

I have expirience in Information Technology, Health Care, and in Finance.

Let me ask you something, how many people agree with me, we have too many lobbyists, lawyers and career politicians in congress? So you your neighbors!

Amended Credentials Report - 1194 delegates -- 598 for a quorum

Jim Postma:

I'm a retired Engineer and Rocket Scientist. I'm a lifelong Christian, I support family vaules and I am pro-life. I spent most of my times defending our nation, in the Air Force and a civil engineer. Politically, I've been a political activist almost all my life (Goldwater and anti-Communist movement). Being an activist has its limits, someone has to go to congress and stop this.

The Communist/Socialist party went underground a few years ago and have been taking advantage of liberals ever since. If we dont stand up and some something, we're gonna be Nazi germany, the USSR, and if we don't do something we're gonna be a Socialist nation.

One person speaking the truth is more important that guns and money. Standing up to enforce the Constitution and for the Individual to learn responsibility is what needs to happen. Individual needs to learn that the government cant solve all its problems.

Justice Jim Johnson (Washington Supreme Court):

6 years ago I promised to support the US and State Constitution and not legislate from the bench.

Justice Richard Sanders:

I don't know if Clint Didier is out there, I wanted to remind him that I played in the Rose Bowl, albeit it was a french horn.

Declaration of Rights. Govts are established to protect and maintain individual rights. Madison quote on Judicial role to keep its contract with the people that he calls the Constitution.

15 yrs experience. Every time I hear a case I want to stand up for the rights and liberties of the people. Strong on property rights, right to own, use and develop property. Strong on 2nd Amendment, right to keep and bear arms is essential to maintaining our freedoms. His opponents has contributed over $26,000 of his own money to liberal democrats.

Article Writeup

Article 1 : The Future of Advertising is Now – June 2006

1) At a breakfast seminar in May 2002 a CEO of major television company said he was not conserved with future of advertising in digital media. “It’s the simple law of supply and demand, major marketers need to reach mass audiences, and we are the only (emphasis added) game in town, They have the demand. We have the supply. And as with any product, as that supply gets harder to find, you can charge more for it.”

a. I found this interesting, specifically that at the time he claimed that TV, or more specifically above-the-line advertising was “the only game in town”. It seems so long ago that internet ads and digital media didn’t exist and in this guys mind, it never would

2) “These can be glorious times for media companies and marketers that are capable of change.

a. The ability to adapt and change in a market that has had such stringent rules over the past 30 years or so has got to be a difficult challenge to overcome. I’m reminded of Alec Baldwin’s famous performance in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) “Always be closing” speech, “You got leads, Mitch and Murray paid good money. Get their names to sell them. You can’t close the leads your given, you can’t close sh*t, YOU ARE SH*T. Hit the brinks pal cause you are going out.”

3) Successful advertisers are those learning to reconfigure efforts by

-Shifting spending/Management attention to digital media

-Developing formats to include interaction with consumers

-Creating new metrics to measure outcomes

-Combining above-the-line (mass media) with below-the-line (consumer specific) advertising

-“In-sourcing” new talent to exploit opportunities in digital media

4) In 2004 10% of Chrystler’s advertising budget was online, in 2006 it was 30% and by 2008 it was to be 50%

a. The steep almost exponential growth of the online advertising field during the first decade of the new millennium makes me think that there will be continued advances in technology and to not get comfortable with just advertising on-line.

5) Different types of online video content include

-Video on demand (paid for by consumer)

-Ad-supported video (paid for by advertisers)

a. Comcast says that 65% of its customers with video on demand use the function on average 23 times per month.

6) Exhibit 6: “The Purchasers Funnel”: a linear sequence of mental events, with each stage dependent on the success of the previous stage, producing a ladder-like progression towards purchase.

7) Video game systems – Xbox, PlayStations, Nintendo’s … sales expected to grow rapidly as technology increases, consumers say they like the authenticity that real-world advertising lends to fictional game environment.

a. This seems like a great opportunity for companies that can incorporate their message into video game systems (FIFA Soccer, NCAA Basketball, Grand Theft Auto…)

8) The accountability Revolution. Being able to track online purchases allows marketers the ability to know whether their advertising is resulting in specific purchases. Before there was no conclusive evidence on way or another as to whether advertising was significantly increasing demand, but with digital media, marketers are provided with a myriad of information that they can use to increase below-the-line marketing and show its effectiveness.

9) Postbroadcast Identities. Advertisers are being much more aggressive in marketing, turning away from broadcasting to the masses toward a more focused approach of targeting specific customers. Chrystler hosted a Jeep Camp to advertise its products to specific customers and Home Depot used a partnership with DIY Network to bring in “toolbelt-divas” into their stores.

10) In House Renovation. Nearly 70% of all U.S. Companies have reorganized their marketing departments from 2001 to 2006 in include digital media. Companies need to realize that they are dealing with unprecedented complexity and they need to make their choices accordingly.

Article 2: The Battle for Your Social Circle (November 2007)

1) Biggest problem facing digital advertising industry is that companies spend a large portion of their advertising budget to target online consumers, but the average consumer is not impacted by the online advertising. “The internet has vacuumed the value out of all manner of industries from music to retail…”

a. The bleak outlook of advertising online is a difficult challenge. Companies understand that consumers are spending a lot of time online, but the difficulties of reaching them and influencing them to make a purchase (especially when so much content is free) is the great challenge.

2) The typical consumer trains their eyes to ignore Google advertising, banners and other online advertising. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wanted to transform this into something that consumers could use and “Like”.

a. Facebook is developing its “Like” button to be able to leave the confines of Facebook.com and be integrated into the entire internet, so that any webpage out there can be “Liked” by internet users. This will give timely feedback to developers and marketers as to what people are wanting form their online experiences.

3) Google is the Goliath of the internet industry, it understands that ad revenue is big business and is pouring a lot of effort into social networking sites such as Ning, MySpace, Linkdin and Orkut in order to encompass a greater number of viewers. Google also hopes to develop a “run-anywhere” platform and ad strategy that can be incorporated into all of these networks in order to compete with Facebook.

4) Facebook worries about “spamming your friends” and widget makers for Facebook worry that “new types of news feeds, placements and pages being to dilute the Facebook news feed”

a. Consumers know when an online platform has been exploited by businesses, that is one reason why MySpace hit a wall and lost a large percentage of its users to Facebook. In order to keep a loyal population, Facebook must limit its advertising and corporate influence.

5) Facebook and Google both realize the importance of the online population being able to interact with companies, the premise of turning some of the online population into “fans” and interact with the potential consumers is driving the digital advertising industry. Social interaction with consumers is the 21st centuries equivalent to the TV commercial of the 1940’s, it’s not perfect, but it’s a good start.
